Kowloon City in Transformation: The Kowloon City Themed Walking Trail

Service Overview

躍變.龍城—九龍城主題步行徑

Supported by the Urban Renewal Fund, the Welfare Council’s 7-year Kowloon City Themed Walking Trail project began operation on 1st January, 2018. The project is designed to bring residents and stakeholders together in an effort to promote heritage preservation and the cultural value of Kowloon City. The Council hopes that the spirit of the community will be preserved in spite of redevelopment and new infrastructure.

At 6.5km long, the trail is divided into 5 sections stretching from Kowloon City Park to its north, across Sung Wong Toi, To Kwa Wan and St. Mary's Church in Hung Hom to its south. All construction works of the five routes had been completed in Dec 2022, including refurbishing planters and railings, installing infill blocks, sign plates, information panels and elderly-friendly benches, etc. People can also scan the panels through the AR technology of our mobile app for the history of Kowloon City.  In the meantime, in addition to organising docent tours and exhibitions about Kowloon City, project staff have also been collecting public opinion and promoting the concept of participatory design at roadside booths and workshops. Such activities would give the general public a glimpse of the concepts behind the design and its details, thus engaging them in the process and achieving one of the project's goals: to bring the community together. The project also invited residents, other citizens and local groups to form a team of volunteers known as the "KC Transformers”, who, together, create and promote trail-related activities.

Service Feedback

The Kowloon City Themed Walking Trail Officially completed

The Welfare Council was supported by the Urban Renewal Fund to design and operate the Kowloon City Themed Walking Trail. The Walking Trail is the first in Hong Kong to be themed after a district, stretches more than 6.5 kilometres, and comprises five routes, each with its own characteristics. By connecting residents and stakeholders in the district, the Walking Trail promotes the preservation of historical relics and the development of arts, culture, and more.

After five years, the Kowloon City Themed Walking Trail, titled ‘Kowloon City in Transformation’, has completed construction. The five routes are, respectively, the Walled City Historical Walk; the Local Culture Walk; the Community Art Walk; the Waterfront Leisure Walk; and the Temple and Church Walk. Combining the history of the Walled City, local historical sites, art and culture, cityscape and religious features, not only does it link up the district’s main historical buildings and facilities, it also passes on the district's precious history and reinterprets the stories of people and the community.
